Do you remember a time in your life where you saw something on TV and thought to yourself “I can do that!”? Other times, however, you find yourself with a complete lack of motivation. Feeling unmotivated is normal, and it happens to everyone at some point. Luckily, there are ways to ignite your passion and take back your sense of motivation. Maintaining motivation can seem daunting at times, but once you figure out your “why” you can compete and succeed in all areas.
Motivation and dedication keeps us going through challenges. In general, there are two types of motivation: internal motivation and external motivation. Internal Motivation This is the motivation that is driven by personal and meaningful rewards. The athletes that lean on internal motivation usually focus on their love for the sport, the challenge of each competition, skill improvement, and personal growth. These motivators remind us to become the best version of ourselves. Focusing on internal motivators can create a consistent level of motivation and help you figure out your “why”. External Motivation These motivators are exterior factors that push us to achieve a goal. External motivated athletes concentrate on external elements such as: friendships, parents, trophies, and scholarships. External motivation does not come from our personal goals, it is coming from people or rewards that want to see a result from us. What is your motivation? Motivation is different for every person. Even though both internal and external motivation can both help us achieve our goals, internal motivation is more effective because it is personal to us instead of someone else pushing us to achieve a goal they have set. The key to finding your “why” is using motivation to keep you consistent in achieving all of your goals. So, if you ever feel unmotivated, remind yourself of your internal motivators, and it will bring you back to your “why”.
