![]() If you tend to feel anxious before a big competition, you are not alone. Performance anxiety can prevent you from playing the sport you enjoy the most and can negatively affect your self-esteem and confidence. Although it may be impossible to completely eliminate the feeling of performance anxiety, there are many things you can do to reduce your anxiety. Focus on the Positive
We all tend to think of the worst-case scenario when we are in an important competition, however, it is important to focus on positive and future focused things. Visualize your success, and think to the future instead of focusing on the past. Relaxation Techniques Practice controlled breathing, meditation, and other strategies to help relax you when you start thinking negative thoughts. It is important to incorporate some type of relaxation technique into your daily routine so that when you are faced with a high pressure situation, that skill is there when you need it. Shift Your Focus Instead of focusing on yourself and your fear, shift your focus to gratitude. When we focus on all of the things we can be grateful for (our teammates, the fact that we are healthy and competing at a high level, our family who supports us, etc.) it helps drown out the negativity and fear. Confronting challenges and finding ways to overcome them is empowering. Using these techniques, you will learn to feel excited for competitions instead of being nervous and fearful.
